Samsung Galaxy S3 vs Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini

Samsung recently unveiled Galaxy S3 mini, the ‘mini’ version of previously launched flagship Galaxy S3 I9300 (international version). With some sort of compromise with features Samsung is aiming at the mid-high segment. Therefore, this is the best weapon they could use, branding it under Galaxy S3. Samsung did exactly the same. The droid is already made available in Germany (8 GB variant for now, 16 GB variant coming soon). Expansys is selling out the 8 GB variant for £314.99. It’s regardless to say, it is cheaper and cheaper by a fair margin. Let’s take a quick look at each segment to make it clear to you, whether to buy Galaxy S3 Mini or not.

1. Operating System

Galaxy S3 runs Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box. Currently, it’s upgradable to Android 4.1.1 JellyBean. In case, you have not received the upgrade wait for a a few more days. Depending on carrier and country upgrade may be delayed. Anyway, on the other hand, Galaxy S3 Mini runs Android v4.1.1 JellyBean right from the first day. Nothing to separate the duos here.
Winner: Tied

2. Processor

Samsung, with no surprise, went with home made Exynos quad core in their flagship Galaxy S3. The SoC could easily take on NVIDIA Tegra 3 at the moment it was marketed. Currently, Exynos 4412 quad core fails in front of Qualcomm’s all new APQ8064 Snapdragon S4 Pro. But it’s fairly new in market and was not available when Galaxy S3 was launched. Therefore, the Exynos 4412 chipset is really a good one to say the least. On the other hand, Galaxy S3 Mini is surprisingly using NovaThor 8420 SoC. It would have been better if Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 or at least MSM8660 Snapdragon S4 is used in this smartphone. Nothing we can do about that! Processor may make users pay in Galaxy S3 Mini.
Winner: Galaxy S3

3. Display

Galaxy S3 boasts 4.8 inch Super AMOLED Capacitive display with 720×1280 pixels resolution at 306 ppi which is pretty impressive in deed. Nokia Lumia 920, Apple iPhone 5 and LG Optimus G belts better ppi in display (Oppo Find 5 may be using higher ppi, 441 ppi in fact, in display but should not be considered until it goes past rigorous testing). On the other hand, Galaxy S3 mini is ordinary to be honest. It sports 4.0 inch Super AMOLED Capacitive WVGA display with 480×800 pixels resolution at 233 ppi. Display is not at all impressive in Galaxy S3 Mini. Also the Gorilla Glass 2 used in Galaxy S3 for additional level of safety is not being used in Galaxy S3 Mini.
Winner: Galaxy S3

4. Memory

Both these droids are supplied 1 GB of RAM to run applications without too much of lagging. That’s quite okay with Galaxy S3 Mini. Galaxy S3 comes with 16/32/64 GB storage models and micro SD card slot expandable up to 32 GB. On the other hand, Galaxy S3 Mini is having 8/16 GB storage models and micro SD card slot expandable up to 32 GB. Therefore, Galaxy S3 is more suitable when you feel the need of more storage in your smartphone.
Winner: Galaxy S3

5. Camera

Samsung Galaxy S3 sports 8 MP rear camera with addons like LED flash, auto focus, face detection, smile detection etc. Camera records full HD 1080p video. Front camera for video calling is also a 2 MP one. In contrast to that, Galaxy S3 Mini camera is compromised to 5 MP that records 720p HD video. VGA front facing camera is there but there is distinct difference in sensor size that plays major role in image quality. BSI sensor, used in Galaxy S3, can take way better images than ordinary camera. Therefore, Galaxy S3 Mini has nothing to take on it’s predecessor here.
Winner: Galaxy S3

6. Connectivity

In connectivity segment both features Bluetooth, Wi-Fi with hotspot connectivity, micro USB port, NFC (optional) and micro USB port 2.0. Galaxy S3 comes with MHL link for TV-out whereas this feature is absent in mini version. For data network connectivity both offer GPRS/EDGE Class 12 speed up to 237 Kbps but in 3G HSDPA network Galaxy S3 can hit 21 Mbps speed whereas Galaxy S3 Mini manages to hit 14.4 Mbps speed. GPRS navigation using Google Maps is there in both Galaxy models. Once again Galaxy S3 is awarded a lead.
Winner: Galaxy S3

7. Battery

Li-Ion 2100 mAh battery is used in Galaxy S3 whereas 1500 mAh battery is supplied with Galaxy S3 Mini. Though the display size of Mini is smaller it may deliver less hrs of backup just because the battery size is considerably small.
Winner: Galaxy S3

8. Media & Entertainment

In this segment both these handsets are close. DivX/XviD video formats are supported by both these handsets. Native music, video player and stereo FM Radio with RDS are there in both these droids.
Winner: Tied

9. Price

This is the only plus point Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini provides to it’s customers. In case, you are running out of budget Mini will give you some sort of relief.

Final Conclusion

You can see in all segments Galaxy S3 beats it’s successor. Go for it if you have the budget. Otherwise, you may get back to the new Samsung Galaxy member Galaxy S3 Mini. So, the final result of Samsung Galaxy S3 vs Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini comparison yields result in favor of the first one.

  2. Looking at the comparison S3 mini seems to be okay at the price it is available at. But I am disappointed with display resolution.

  3. I think they release the mini version just to grab the iPhone users otherwise no break through technology in mini version.

  4. The total number of Adsense units allowed on a page is 3. But I see 4 on this page. Is it not against the Adsense terms. I know this is off topic but please reply.

  5. Galaxy S 3 mini is good as per its price…the only thing that differs from its “dad” is display and camera…overall its good!! I’m thinking of buying it when it’ll launch in India.
