As all of us know, Apple unveiled two new smartphones: the 4.7″ iPhone 6 and the 5.5″ iPhone 6 Plus a couple of days ago. Something that followed the release of the two new smartphones is something we had been waiting for as Apple has made it quite a trend. Yes people, we are talking about the older versions of the iPhones being made cheaper after the release of the new iPhones and the makers are not the only ones to do so. Several online retailers too have slashed the prices for the old iPhone models.
The price slash came with an announcement from the company which said that the older models of the iPhone, the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c will live on for customers who do not want to get the iPhone 6 or the iPhone 6 Plus for some reasons.
The iPhones made cheaper are the iPhone 5s and its plastic-clad sibling the iPhone 5c. Both the smartphones have been made cheaper to varying extent by online retailers but talking about the official Apple store, the discount is a $100. This means you can now get the iPhone 5c with 8 GB of memory for free while you’ll have to shed out $99 for the 16 GB variant of the iPhone 5s.
The prices mentioned above are the current official prices in the US as Apple has not made any further announcements about the price slash in UK or Australia.
To get the 8 GB iPhone 5c for free, you’ll have to sign a two-year contract with Apple and the same goes for the iPhone 5s 16 GB at $99. This is not the first time Apple has made this move. They have been following this trend for some time now.
Before the price slash the Apple iPhone 5c came in at $99 for the 16 GB variant and $199 for the 32 GB variant. The iPhone 5s came in a little costlier at $199 for 16 GB, $299 for 32 GB and $399 for 64 GB. The prices mentioned above are the ones you had to pay while getting into a two-year contract.
While there has been no news about prices slashed in any other country, Apple has also slashed the off-contract prices for the two older iPhone models in a country where you cannot get phones on contract: India. While the price being offered by the retailers vary, the official price for the iPhone 5c 8 GB has been brought down to INR 31,500 from its launching price of INR 37,500. The iPhone 5s too has been made cheaper, the 32 GB model now costing INR 49,500 instead of the its previous price of INR 62,500 receiving a price cut of INR 13,000 while the 16 GB model is now available for INR 44,500 being made cheaper by INR 9,000.
In comparison, the iPhone 6 costs $199 while its elder sibling the iPhone 6 Plus costs $299 on a two-year contract. Their off-contract prices have been set at $649 and $749 for the 16 GB variants, $749 and $849 for the 64 GB variant and $849 and $949 for the 64 GB variants respectively.
The question that now arises is that what device should one go for considering the latest price slash in the old iPhone models? Other smartphone manufacturers like Sony, Samsung, HTC etc. offer their current flagships which are all Android powered. For e.g: Samsung’s current flagship the Galaxy S5 comes in at INR 43,250 with 32 GB of memory while the iPhone 5s with the same internal memory costs INR 49,500. These prices however are not of much use as in today’s era, the 32 Gb memory won’t last for long considering the number and the size of apps that one installs in their smartphones these days. While the Samsung Galaxy S5 allows you to expand your memory upto 128 GB via a microSD card, you cannot do that with your iPhone 5s. Unfortunately, the iPhone 5s is only available in the 16 GB and 32 GB variants, so you’ll have to compromise on the memory section. The iPhone 5c which comes in only the 8 GB variant comes in at INR 31,500. Other smartphone manufacturers like Sony and HTC too have their flagships up for the competition, with the Xperia Z3 16 GB’s rumored price at INR 49,999 while the HTC One M8 costs INR 41,900 with 16 GB internal memory storage.
With the reduced prices, Appli iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c seem to be offering a deal that many may find intimidating. But one thing you’ll have to compromise with if you decide to buy an iPhone is the storage memory. While the other smartphones listed here have expandable memory via a microSD card, this is a luxury Apple users will fail to enjoy and that too in today’s era when everybody wants everything HD.
If you’re an Apple fan and wanted to get the iPhone 5s but the prices kept you from doing so earlier, this might be a good opportunity. If you want more functionality and more storage memory, the Android devices would suit you better. But the decision is ultimately yours.
