Smartphones are getting more smarter nowadays, not only software and feature wise, but design wise too! In April 2012, Asus introduced the concept of Padfone, which was available in different markets from June 2012.
The above Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich based design managed to get a lot of attention from the technology gurus and users as it combines the 3 – in – 1 experience of Cellphone + Tablet + Laptop. The concept suggests docking the cellphone in the tablet and the whole tablet can be attached to a keyboard docking station. The tablet and keyboard has inbuilt batteries but are function less without the cellphone docked in. Padfone’s unique design got Asus the Golden Award for Smart Handheld Devices Innovation 2011.
Though launched in June 2012 in the US and some Asian markets, it came to India last month only, in September with a hefty price of about Rs.65000!
Asus will be introducing the all new Padfone 2 on 16th October 2012. The launch ceremony will take place in Milan, Italy and in Taiwan. Many reports suggest the Padfone 2 will be released instantly in the European market (e.g. Italy release) and some selected Asian markets. Asus India has till now not confirmed anything regarding the availability but since Padfone 1 was launched in September 2012 only, many believes it will take at least 3 to 4 more months for the Indian market for release of Padfone 2.
The Padfone 2 has a completely different cellphone docking style and the tablet attachment looks much more sleeker and light weight compared to the previous Padfone. No pictures of the keyboard docking station is available yet. The following leaked picture suggests Padfone 2 will be having following features:
|Processor||Quad-core 1.5 GHz Krait|
|Chipset||Qualcomm APQ8064 Snapdragon|
|Networks and Sim||2G + 3g + 4G(LTE) enabled, mini Sim|
|Weight, Dimensions and Screen||135 g, 137.9 x 68.9 x 9 mm, 4.7 inch Super Amoled HD display with Gorilla Glass|
|Memory||Up to 32gb (unconfirmed) with micro SD card expansion option.|

|Other||Geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection, Accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, WLAN etc.|
The above specifications are very promising specs with expected OS as Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. With this specs, smartphones like Samsung Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5 falls way behind if comparing the CPU and GPU performance. This is the same processor and chipset used by LG in Optimus G which out performs all the available cellphones. The LTE feature adds a nice touch for the European and American users.
Another interesting piece of technology is the above Asus Bluetooth 4.0 Stylus. It is a very attractive stylus which has integrated mic, speaker and volume control keys and is charged over micro-usb port. When your phone is docked in, you can attend the calls using the USB-Pen-Stylus. It is just like holding a pen to your ear like a phone. The above stylus was an included accessory in Padfone 1 and is expected to be included in Padfone 2 also.
