Facebook Timeline: Everything you need to know

Facebook announced a new series of enhancements in it’s f8 conference back in September, one of which was the new profile called Timeline. Facebook Timeline is not something that you might have not heard off, specially when FB has already started to roll it out to everyone. For those who already know about timeline and those who want to learn about it, this article will give you a complete walk through of what, why and how of Facebook’s new Timeline Profile.

Before I say anything, watch this video to know what FB want to say about timeline:

I loved it, tell me more about Timeline 🙂

Great to hear that, so let’s get started with the most observable change when somebody lands to your profile.. Yes the Cover!

Timeline Cover

Cover is basically a wide full width sized image lying on top of your Profile page. You can add any unique picture that describes you best or your best moment or may be your best shot..

Fill this wide, open space with a unique image that represents you best. It’s the first thing people see when they visit your timeline.

Alongside Cover image, you can find your profile picture in the square frame besides which your name is displayed. Not only that, All your information which was on left side menu in older profile view, has now been aggregated just below your cover image including your Information about you, your friend list, your photos, your check-ins, likes, subscribers, notes and subscriptions!

A very interesting feature has also been added and highlighted called “View Activity”, though this existed earlier as well, but the way it works now is totally different. Click on Activity log and you’ll be presented with whole new Activity page, you can track down all your facebook activities since the beginning Year wise, Month wise and even Date wise. You decide what activities are displayed on your wall and who all can see it. Remember Activity page is only viewable by you!

Timeline Stories

Facebook now arranges your Status updates, Photos, Videos, Check-ins and everything that you shares in the form of Stories

Share and highlight your most memorable posts, photos and life events on your timeline. This is where you can tell your story from beginning, to middle, to now.

You can share your Status from the new update bar, placed inside Stories section of Timeline. It is same as before with an added feature called Life Event, that is kind of attractive. You can add events that occurred in your life, like Work and Education, Family and Relationship etc.

Apps

FB  now supports some featured apps, that are specially designed to integrate into timeline flawlessly and updates your friends with what you are enjoying.

The film you quote. The songs you have on repeat. The activities you love. Now there’s a new class of social apps that let you express who you are through all the things you do.

Engadget says the new Timeline has a lot to offer:

  1. Navigate anywhere, fast: Get to your groups, apps, pages, and settings with a single press
  2. Search and you will discover: Look through friends, subscribers, apps, and pages
  3. See your friends tags on pictures and zoom: New photo viewing experience
  4. Faster notifications: Get alerted in real-time with new push notifications
  5. Games & Apps: Play games and access your favorite apps on the go
  6. Access to mobile timeline (If you already have a timeline)
  7. Access to friend lists and subscriptions

And I kind of agree with it, not only Engadget, you have full web buzzing around with this Timeline! Some for it, some against it. In my opinion, Facebook had to change and it did giving it’s users a new reason to stick around with facebook. While it’s all good, it does brings up some new privacy issues about which I’ll be writing soon in my next article. Till then enjoy the new Timeline as it rolls out to you!

Many people love Timeline but I have started to hate it because it doesn’t load all the updates from the user and also it takes too much time to load.

Imran facebook’s new algorithm has started sorting out posts from people you don’t interact much with. If you want to see all the posts, go to News Feed and just below Status Update box on right side you’ll file “sort” written. Click it and select Most recent instead of Top stories which is the default option. And you’ll see all the posts from all your friends.

      Hope this helps
