whatsapp

You might have heard about WhatsApp already. But for those who haven’t come across it yet here’s a quick intro to WhatApp and what it does.

WhatsApp is actually a mobile messenger that works just like SMS but has some more awesome features and works by the means of internet. It is available for devices like the iPhone, Blackberry, Android, Windows Phone or Symbian (S60 & S40).

It is the main application I personally use to stay in touch with my friends. It is great. I can share photos, videos and other content with my friends on WhatsApp.

In this post I will tell you how you can install WhatsApp on Android devices that don’t come with SIM support. Yes, its true that you can only use WhatsApp on devices with SIM support which makes it hard for the users with an Android device like a Wi-Fi only tablet or Android based music player like Samsung Galaxy Player.  But this is what this post is about. Just read on to know how you can install WhatsApp on Android devices that don’t come with SIM support easily.

Download the latest WhatsApp.apk

For installing WhatsApp on your device you will first need the WhatsApp.apk file. You can follow the link below to get the latest version of the apk file so that you can install it easily on your device. You can also try downloading from the Google Play Store but possibly it will show a “not compatible to your device” notification. But in that situation you will still be able to install it on your device. Just download it from the link given below.

Download latest WhatsApp.apk

Installation

Now that you have downloaded the WhatsApp.apk file you will now just need to install it. Installation will take around a few seconds. After installation you will need to set it up. We will Set up WhatsApp in the next step. Make sure you have an active internet connection to set it up.

Setup

Step 1: Now after the installation you need to open the WhatsApp application on your it will show a welcome screen like the below shown image. whatsapp Now choose “Agree and Continue” Step 2:  Now you will be asked to verify your phone number. Enter the phone number you want to use on WhatsApp and touch OK. whatsapp Step 3:  Now you see that WhatsApp will try to verify your phone number. This can take about 5 minutes so you have to wait until then. By this time you will receive a SMS on your phone with a verification code. Step 4: The verification will fail but don’t worry. Check your phone with the number you entered in WhatsApp. You will see a SMS that will contain a verification code that WhatsApp sent you. Enter it in the new screen that you see. After entering, do not touch any buttons as it will automatically take you to a new screen. In case you did not receive any SMS then touch the Call Me button and then listen to the code. Enter the same code in the screen below. whatsapp Step 5: Enter the name you want to be shown in WhatsApp notifications and touch OK. whatsapp Step 6: Nothing! Its done. You have just learned how you can install WhatsApp on Android devices that don’t come with SIM support. Its time now to start exploring the options and settings in WhatsApp.

This method has been tested by me on my Micromax Funbook P300So go on and start messaging.

Does this work anymore? Looks like they have blocked this feature (or should I say patched).

Using whatsapp on tablet is a life saver, but it works better now with the web app. A great way to use whatsapp when at a pc.

Also saved me phone battery. Hany.

    Hi Ujjwal,
    Thanks for the detailed mail.
I was using whatsapp through my PC using bluestacks all these while. Recently I got a Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro which is a WIFI only android. And I found your post on using the whatsapp on such wifi only tablets and I followed the same and it was a success!. Thanks.

But my issue is I have created multiple profiles one for me and one for my wife in the TAB so that we need not log out and log in from all our social network accounts when we use the tabs.

Similar way I want to install whatsapp in my wife’s profile with her number. It is going through the verification process and after that when we are about to enter the account name, it crashes saying “unfortunately the application closed”. Every time I do this I’m getting the same message.

Please not that my profile is set as the primary user and my wife’s profile is set as secondary user. Please guide me how to solve this issue.

    Thanks & regards
    Ashok

      Hey Ashok
Actually this is not something that me or you can fix. I don’t think Whatsapp allows multiple accounts right now on the same tablet.
Your other option would have been OG-Whatsapp but it doesn’t work anymore.

I have a different issue, with whatapp on my tablet. I have installed it perfectly, but, If I want to share files with what’sapp, there is no option of the app on the sharing menu, nor any other texting app in fact is, except from pre-installed messages, email and apps like dropbox. Any advice?

add contacts numbers(using whatsapp) in your gmail account. After some time the contacts will appear in whatsapp contact list.

Hi Ujjwal, I tried to install whatsapp the way you suggested on my samsung galaxy 10.1 tab (wifi only), but after installing whatsapp and pressing ‘Agree and Continue’ I get a notification which says that my device can’t be identified and that I should close down my phone, remove the battery, reboot and try again… Do you know how to fix this?

    Thanx Ujjwal,
It worked on my P300 too. I stumbled upon ur post, while trying to find an alternate for the preinstalled Gtalk, as it kept on crashing whenever i tried to use audio chat, either making a call , or receiving a call from another device.
Tried 2 other apps (beejiveIM and ebuddy), but they somehow wont accept my login and p/w of gmail, while it the same login n password are working fine on my compu.
    Any idea.
Is there any way to reinstall/updrade manually the built – in TALK.
    Regards,
    Anupam

There are many problems in the stock ICS rom of funbook. One of them being the Gtalk problem that you mentioned. But you can search for the Cyanbook rom which is a CM9 based rom for funbook that fixes many problems. I have tried using the Audio chat on it and it works!!
You should check it out. But yeah, it doesn’t support the dongle connectivity.
