About 90% of daily internet users have a Google Account. Most of them have their personal and important data stored in any of the Google’s service (like Gmail, Google Drive, Google Docs, e.t.c). But a very few users have their account configured correctly. It means that most of the Google account users have an account which could be hacked easily by a professional hacker. So, how can we configure a Google account and protect it from getting hacked?

Tip 1: Set Up Recovery Options

It is very important to set Recovery Options on a Google Account. This information is to contact you, if you lose access your account or if you don’t remember your password. There are two important recovery options that you must set up on an account.

  1. Recovery email Address
  2. Phone Number

How to Set Up Recovery Options

Step 1: Sign in to your Google Account and click on “Account” link as shown in the image below.

Step 2: Click on the “Security” tab on a screen like this.

Step 3:  Click on “Account recovery option” button.

Step 4: Enter your “Password and click on the “Verify” button.

Step 5: After the verification is complete, you will end up on a screen like this.

 Step 6: Click on “Add Phone” button, select your country and enter your mobile in the text field.

Step 7: Click on “Add Recovery email address” button and add another email address of yours.

Step 8: Click on the Save” button.

That is it. You have successfully set up your Google account with recovery options.

Tip 2: Set a Strong Password

A strong password has letters, numbers and symbols in it. Using numbers, mixed-case letters and symbols in your password can increase the difficulty of guessing or cracking your password.

You must have a unique password for all your web accounts (like Google, Facebook, e.t.c). Re-using same password is risky. Also, if some gets your password for one service, the he could easily gain access to the other. So, it is important for you to have a unique password for all your services.

Steps to Change Your Google Account Password

Step 1: Go to your “Security” Settings.

Step 3: Fill in your “old and new passwords” in the text boxes.

You have successfully changed your account’s password.

Tip 3: Be Aware of Phishing

A Phishing is a way of getting important information like Username, password or Credit-Card detail. This is usually done by creating a fake clone of the original login page of a website. Many people create Phishing websites to hack someone’s account information. So, be careful when providing your username and password to a login page.

How to Detect a Phishing Website

Detecting a phishing website is quiet an easy job. All you need to do is look at the URL of the web page carefully. A phishing website is a clone of the original website but it cannot acquire the same URL as that of the real one.

Some Other Tips

  1. Setup 2-Step Verification for your account.
  2. Clear your browser’s cookies
  3. Never show your password to anyone.
  4. Don’t click on spam mails (Simply delete them).
  5. Change your password often (Once in a month).
