Many of you may be of the opinion that photo editing softwares are something which require a lot of disk space and are difficult to use. But there are some lite weight free image editing softwares which do not hog lot of disk space and are very easy to use. Here are some of the famous and best light weight imaged editing softwares.

1.GIMP

By far, Both techies and users agree that Gimp is the best light weight image edit app in the market.With large number of  tutorials available, using Gimp becomes hassle free.Gimp has a great platform support as it works with  Windows,Mac,Linux and even  FreeBSD and Sun OpenSolaris. With professional editing tools, Gimp can be easily used by both amateurs and professionals.

Seashore is a software which is though advanced enough for professional use but still not polished and capable enough for professional use.But one of the biggest drawback of seashore is its user interface.The interface takes a lot of time till you get used to and even the tools may require too many extra clicks.

6.Xara Xtreme

Even if you don’t have any image editing experience, using xara xtreme will not be much difficult.Low price, easy interface, undoubtedly, Xara can be  a powerful alternate to the other professional illustrators available. It is a vector-based drawing and illustration program, suitable for Web graphics, illustration, technical drawing etc.Biggest flaw in Xara is its narrow OS support. Xara has only been developed for Windows yet.

7.ChocoFlop

Chocoflop is a graphics manipulation programme for mac which can be useful for quick image edits. Chocoflop supports Rich Text Layers, Paint tools with table pressure support. Users have complained that chocoflop crashes sometimes but there is no harm in trying it once because u only risk time.

8.Pixen

Developed for Mac only, Pixen is a must for those in the field of animation and those who have keen interest in low resolution art. The best thing about Pixen is that it is free under an MIT license.Pixen is a graphics editor that is especially designed for use with small-sized graphics such as sprites for games which though have disappeared with the technological advancement but still come in handy for gadgets such as iPod.

10.Photoscape

I personally use photoscape and one of the best feature I noticed about it is ease of use. Photoscape is so easy to use that even a kid can edit pictures without much help.But the layers,filters are of intermediate quality. Overall Photoscape does not boasts high quality editing and is no good for professional use.

  1. For an article listing software on the basis of their ‘lightness’, it would have been appropriate to mention their size, so that the reader could compare an decide.

  2. Good article, but I hate to say it, Gimp and Inkscape are far from light. Maybe you have a 2.7Ghz+ processor, 8Gb Ram, so everything is light on your machine. But on 2.5Ghz, 4Gb Ram, not so much.

    • Thanks for your comment ! Actually, yes you are right ! Gimp n inkscape ‘s new versions are a bit haevy on processing front.But compared to photoshop, its still a win-win 🙂
