Xiaomi Mi4 Specs and Features

Xiaomi, when entered the Indian market, took the whole country by storm with its affordable smartphones that offered cutting-edge features. But though it enjoyed amazing launches of its smartphones, there were certain roadblocks like the patent issues that lead to a ban on its smartphones and certain privacy issues.

Inspite of all these issues, people are loving their Xiaomi devices and that’s the reason, Mi4 is going to launch in India, exclusively on Flipkart.

Here are some of the best features of the Xiaomi Mi4 smartphone:

Display: The smartphone comes with a 5-inch IPS LCD Capacitive touchscreen with a 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution (~441 ppi pixel density) and with multi-touch support.

Platform: The device runs on Android 4.4.3 KitKat OS and is powered by a 2.5 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor and 3 GB of RAM.

Camera: The smartphone comes equipped with a 13 MP rear camera with 4K video recording and LED flash and an 8 MP front camera.

Memory: The phone comes with 16 GB of built-in memory, which is not expandable.

Battery: The device comes with a 3080 mAh battery.

Other Features: Apart from all the above specs, the Mi4 also comes with all the traditional features like Bluetooth, WiFi, DLNA, hotspot, microUSD slots, GPS, accelerometer, gyro and others.

Xiaomi Mi4 – Shortcomings

When Mi3 was launched in India, it completely changed the entire market by giving the best specs at the lowest possible price. But after seeing the specs of the Mi4 and the price at which it is available, I won’t buy it at any cost.

The device costs around 19,999 INR and offers only a few improvements than its predecessor, rest everything is mostly the same.

According to me, the Mi4 won’t be able to repeat the history. There are many reasons that can predict why the sales number won’t skyrocket like the Mi3.

Xiaomi Mi4

The first reason for this negativity is  Xiaomi Mi4 which is going to be launched in India is the 16 GB variant and the memory is non-expandable – 16 GB internal memory, that’s it! And the phone is available in only one color – WHITE!

Compare it to the Chinese variant, the smartphone there comes in different colors and it offers 16-64 GB memory variant. And it supports LTE, which is not the case with the Indian version. So I don’t understand why they are launching a low-tier smartphone in one of their biggest markets.

It looks as if the company is trying to sell the old smartphones to their Indian customers in a bid to clear their older stocks.

The other reason is the price of the device. If the price of the smartphone was around 15,000 INR, I wold have considered to buy it or even recommend it to others. But the current price tag is a lot more. The company itself has set the standards for a cheaper smartphone with high-end specs so it can’t expect us to pay more now.

And I was expecting to see Lollipop version in the Mi4. It’s just my wish, but it would be awesome to have the latest version of Android.

Privacy Issues for Xiaomi Devices

The biggest concern when buying a Xiaomi device should be, whether your personal data is being compromised or not? The company got into controversy last year because it was alleged that the smartphones sent the user data back to the Chinese company servers.

The company denied such allegations but it was proved correct by a test by F-Secure that the user’s personal data like contacts, messages, IMEI number were indeed being sent to the company.

After the test, the company was quick to release an update that addressed the privacy issue. The MIUI Cloud app was made optional and so users were able to turn it off from the settings and prevent any data from being sent to the company.

So seeing that this was the biggest problem for Xiaomi in 2014, I am now thinking that the MIUI Cloud app will be kept optional in Mi4 device as well.

Other Better Smartphone Options:

OnePlus One – Price 21,999 INR

OnePlus One

If you are spending money then at least spend it to buy a great product. And though the price of OnePlus One is a little more than Xiaomi Mi4, it is worth it.

The device boasts of amazing features like 2.5 GHz Quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 5.5-inch Full HD LTPS IPS display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3, 64 GB internal memory (not expandable), 3 GB RAM, 13 MP + 5 MP Camera, 3100 mAh battery, 4K video recording, 4G with nano and micro SIM trays and the best of all, Cyanogen 11S OS based on Android 4.4!

Lenovo Vibe X2 – Price 19,999 INR

Lenovo Vibe X2

Lenovo Vibe X2 comes with a True8Core octa-core processor and though it has 2 GB RAM, it wins with a 32 GB of internal storage.

Features of the smartphone – MediatTek MT6595m 2.0 GHz True8Core Octa-core processor, 5-inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, 2 GB RAM and 32 GB internal memory (not expandable), 13 MP rear + 5 MP front cameras, 4G dual sim support (micro + nano), 2300 mAh battery and Android 4.4 OS with Vibe UI.

Final Words for Xiaomi Mi4:

I would certainly not buy the smartphone because at the price of Rs. 19,999, it doesn’t support 4G, comes with very less internal memory and offers just a single color option. A better choice would be to go for OnePlus One.

However if the smartphone is launched in future again with its full specifications, just like its Chinese counterpart, I would consider buying the device, but at this stage, it’s a NO for me.
